Obituary for Lawrence “Larry” Roland Benke
October 29, 1934 to December 17, 2024
Lawrence “Larry” Roland Benke, age 90, passed away peacefully on December 17,
2024, in the presence of his loved ones. Born on October 29, 1934, in Michigan to
Virginia and Paul Benke, Larry was the youngest of three brothers, Paul and Robert
“Bob.” At the age of 14, Larry moved with his family to California, where he later
graduated from Gardena High School. It was there that he met the love of his life, Joyce
E. (Johnson) Benke, whom he married and shared 67 years of happiness.
Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, where he was
a personal driver for a general and later served as a tank commander. He cherished the
bonds he formed with his fellow soldiers and maintained lifelong friendships with many
of his service brothers. After his time in the Army, Larry continued his service in the U.S
Marine Corp. Reserves for 10 years.
Larry was proud to be an active community member from a young age. In his early 20s,
he served with the Junior Chamber of Commerce, DeMolay, joined the Masons and was
involved in his church. These early experiences of service and leadership shaped the
character of the man he became.
Larry’s professional career was marked by his dedication and intellect. He began
working for Pacific Bell (now AT&T) as a lineman, and through his hard work and
innovation, quickly ascended to the position of Engineer, then manager. Throughout his
35 years with the company, Larry was recognized for his achievements and his ability to
adapt to new technologies. He traveled the world, learning about advancements in the
telecommunications industry, and orchestrated annual conventions that brought
together leaders from across the field to showcase cutting-edge technology.
After retiring, Larry and Joyce embraced the freedom of retirement, traveling across the
northwest in their trailer, exploring new places, and eventually settling in the
breathtaking Flathead Valley of Montana. There, they found peace and happiness for 25
years, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and a close-knit community.
Larry celebrated his 90th birthday in 2024 and marked his 67th wedding anniversary
with Joyce. His health had been declining since August, but he faced his final days with
the same strength and grace that marked his life. His family is forever grateful for the
care and support provided by the caregivers and hospice team during his last weeks.
Larry is predeceased by his daughter Jeanine (Pete) Johnson, and survived by his
devoted wife, Joyce; his daughter Pamela (Norm) Dawson; son Everett (Adriana)
Benke; six grandchildren, Ashlee, Jason, PJ, Rick, Skye, and Ashley; eight great-
grandchildren, Makai, Braxton, Grayson, Madden, Dawson, Trip, Archer, and Isla; as
well as his nephew Eric Benke. Larry’s ashes will be scattered in Montana in
accordance with his wishes.
Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by
all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in
