In Loving Memory of Jonathan Gregg Burgess
October 2, 1973 – May 11, 2026
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jonathan Gregg Burgess, who left us peacefully after a courageous four-year battle with ALS. Jonathan dedicated over 30 years of service to the City of Sacramento Fire Department, culminating his career as a Battalion Chief.
He was also a published author of Gold Rush: Burgess Family Descendants, passionately upholding justice and revealing untold truths about his ancestral land in Coloma. Alongside his twin brother Matthew, he co-founded Burgess Brothers, sharing cherished recipes from his South Sacramento roots and fostering community connections through his love of food.
Jonathan leaves behind his beloved life partner Lauren Brown, daughters Justice (23) and Jordan (21), twin brother Matthew (Sandie), sister Tonia, brothers Dwayne, Morgan, Milton and Ronnie, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Mother Bernice Burgess, and Father Milton Burgess, his sisters Rosalyn and Debra Burgess.
He will always be remembered for his radiant smile, acts of service, and unwavering devotion to his family and community, even in the face of adversity.
In honor of his wishes, there will not be a service; instead, we encourage acts of love and kindness to be shared with those closest to him who are grieving. In lieu of flowers, we ask that all monetary gifts and donations be made to the ALS Association.
