Jonathan David Alspach, a devoted public servant and passionate individual, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, at the age of 79, in Sacramento, California.
Born on March 15, 1946, in New York, New York, Dr. Alspach was an only child who pursued a distinguished career in chemistry. He attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York City, where his interest in science was nurtured. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master's in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), and a doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis, in 1976. Dr. Alspach's academic pursuits didn't stop there. He conducted postdoctoral research at U.C. San Diego and the VA Hospital in La Jolla, as well as in the Division of Immunology of the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope National Medical Center.
With over 30 years of dedicated service to the State of California, Dr. Alspach worked tirelessly in various scientific roles. He retired in 2021 as a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, under the California Environmental Protection Agency. Throughout his career, Dr. Alspach's expertise and ability to resolve challenging environmental issues was invaluable. As a member of the American Chemical Society for nearly 60 years, he remained committed to his field.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Alspach's quirky sense of humor and love for life were evident in his diverse hobbies and interests. He greatly enjoyed driving Ford Mustangs and watching movies, especially science fiction, thrillers, and mysteries. He collected science fiction movie memorabilia, fine fragrances, art glass and fine crystal, ceramics, jewelry, and hippos. Dr. Alspach also appreciated walking in nature and learning about animals.
Dr. Alspach is survived by his daughter, Amber, born in La Jolla in 1979; aunt, Joann; and partner, Brandon. He lost his parents, Anna and Burnell, earlier in life.
Dr. Alspach's commitment to giving back was reflected in his support for various charities, including Canine Companions for Independence, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Center for AIDS Research, Education and Services (CARES).
