Bernado Salvatore Crocco, affectionately known as "Ben," passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Sacramento, Ca. February 11, 1936, Ben was preceded in death by his Italian immigrant parents, Salvatore and Lucia Crocco, and his son, Benny Jr. He was also preceded in death by his four siblings, Russ, Joe, Natalina, and James. Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene, his grandchildren, and his countless nephews and nieces.
Ben graduated from Sacramento High School in 1955, where he was a celebrated athlete. As an outstanding linebacker, he was the first three-time All-City football player in Sacramento history and is still ranked among the city's all-time 100 best football players.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Ben had a true passion for deer hunting in the mountains of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. He later retired to Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1990. A kind and helpful man, he enjoyed assisting others throughout his life. After a fulfilling career, Ben retired from Cal State University in 1990.
Ben will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Funeral Center with no public ceremony.
